'Captain America' Writers Unsure of Time Period for Sequel

Well this is news I just don't understand.

In an interview with MTV, screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely (the duo who wrote Captain America: The First Avenger and have been commissioned to write its sequel) explain they're undecided of what time period CA 2 will take place in.  Why you ask?  The Avengers.

MTV: And you're writing the "Captain America" sequel now, too?

    McFEELY: Yes!

MTV: I know it's early in the process, but do you have a timeline in mind for the sequel? Will it be more World War II adventures or, since it will come out after "Avengers," will it be a modern-era Captain America?

MARKUS: We're very early, still. This is the fun part — when we can say, "Hey, we can do this!" and everyone says, "Yeah!" No one says anything negative at this point in the process. We have a million great ideas and haven't thrown any of them out yet. That being said, it's sort of a weirdly huge opportunity for storytelling in that you know modern Cap through the Avengers at that point, and just by the nature of what we were talking about before, there's going to be a lot of his World War II history we haven't shown. We're going to have two entire timelines to play with.

McFEELY: I wonder if the reaction to ["The First Avenger"] will steer us in some way. First, if it does well... Then, if it does well and people embrace the World War II aspect of it, maybe there's pressure to return there in a large way. But if they don't embrace that aspect and just love Chris Evans as Steve, maybe there's less pressure to do that — you can just keep him in the Avengers universe.

Here's the head scratcher though.  Everyone and their mother knows Captain America: The First Avenger begins in the present day with a team (S.H.I.E.L.D. I think) going to recover Steve Rogers body in the Arctic and ends with them finding him.  I assume somewhere towards the end of the film, it will be explained why and how Chris Evans character is frozen in the first place.  Doesn't that automatically make it impossible to have a sequel in anywhere but the present day, considering you're telling the audience he gets frozen then is found in our time?  Unless somewhere in between, he gets unfrozen, has another Captain America adventure, then is frozen again.  See what I'm saying?

Anyway, I think a sequel taking place in modern day, post-Avengers, would be pretty dam cool.  Seeing Steve Rogers adapt to our modern world puts a whole new spin on a type of sequel we've never seen before.  We'll find out what the game plan is eventually.

Justin Lin Talks Possibility of Directing New 'Terminator' Film

Before I started writing here on ThinkMcFlyThink, I wrote articles for a few websites, one being TheTerminatorFans.com (if you're a die-hard Terminator fan like myself, this is the site for you).  It was for this site that I wrote this article on who should direct Terminator 5.  I remember as I was writing I had Justin Lin originally on the list.  But after reviewing the whole thing, I thought Bill Paxton was a more realistic choice.  How funny the world is.

Back in February, it was reported that Universal was interested in picking up the Terminator franchise and possibly having Justin Lin direct the next feature.  Out promoting Fast Five, Lin was recently asked about this story via Omelete.  While he does answer briefly, he apparently has spoken with Arnold Schwarzenegger about the project.

Omelete: Speaking of big-budget movies  and studio franchises, there’s a lot of talk about you getting to do the Terminator franchise.  Is this happening?  Are you looking forward to it?

Justin Lin: I think one of the great things is that when I got started, no one would return my calls, and now I get a lot of phone calls, which is good.  I have options.  Terminator was one of my favorite films growing up.  And I feel I have a take that I would love to see, and I’ve talked with Arnold and we’ve talked and we’ll see.  Again, I would love to do it, but it has to be the right circumstances.  It has to be the right people.  And there’s other projects too.  But I’m in a position now that I can choose more than I could a year ago, two years ago.  So that is something that is potentially in my future, but when I get home I will sit down and look at my options and choose what I want to do.

As much as I love Terminator, the damage that has been done is almost impossible to repair.  Both Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines and Terminator Salvation completely screwed up this once great franchise.  While Justin Lin definitely seems like a capable director to handle action, it all starts with the script.  They need not a good script, a GREAT script.  Somewhere out there, someone has to be able to crack this mess of Terminator films and bring it all together.

I read a while back that co-writer of Terminator 2: Judgement Day, William Wisher, had written treatments for both T5 and T6 that connects all the dots from the previous four films.  Maybe he's done it and brought it to Universal.  We shall see.

Universal Taking in Joseph Kosinski's 'Horizons' with Tom Cruise

This is exactly the reason people worry about Marvel Studios being bought by Disney.

Tron: Legacy director Joseph Kosinksi has found a new home for his sci-fi project, Horizons, which was originally set up over at The Mouse House:

    Universal Studios.

Heat Vision reports that the studio is in negotiations to pick up the project with none other than Tom Cruise attached to star.

Seems the reason the project left Disney in the first place was that they were hesitant about making a PG-13 actioner.  You know them over there, they want everything "kid friendly."  Poor Avengers.

Anyway, Horizons is said to take place in the future and revolve around a soldier who's assigned to patrol a deserted planet and meets a mysterious traveler.  I assume Cruise will be playing the soldier.  Bad ass.

The film is scheduled to start filming in October.

Teaser Trailer for 'Woman in Black' Starring Daniel Radcliffe

Daniel Radcliffe is a guy who I hope succeeds in his film career once Harry Potter is done this July.  The Brit is a very talented actor who has kept his nose and image clean even though he has been forced to grow up in the spotlight (unlike pretty much all young American stars today).

Here is an early look at Radcliffe's first film, post-Harry Potter, The Woman in Black.  The flick centers on a young lawyer who travels to a remote English town only to discover its ghostly secrets.

Below is the teaser trailer for the film, while below the video is the film's full synopsis.  The Woman in Black hits U.K. theaters February 12th, 2012, while a U.S. release date is still undecided.

The story follows a young lawyer, Arthur Kipps (Radcliffe), who is ordered to travel to a remote village and sort out a recently deceased client’s papers. As he works alone in the client’s isolated house, Kipps begins to uncover tragic secrets, his unease growing when he glimpses a mysterious woman dressed only in black. Receiving only silence from the locals, Kipps is forced to uncover the true identity of the Woman in Black on his own, leading to a desperate race against time when he discovers her true intent.

New Images from 'Captain America: The First Avenger'

Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige will produce CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER. Alan Fine, Stan Lee, David Maisel and Louis D’Esposito will executive produce. The film will be released in the US on July 22, 2011 and distributed by Paramount Pictures.

CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER will focus on the early days of the Marvel Universe when Steve Rogers volunteers to participate in an experimental program that turns him into the Super Soldier known as Captain America.

Born during the Great Depression, Steve Rogers grew up a frail youth in a poor family. Horrified by the newsreel footage of the Nazis in Europe, Rogers was inspired to enlist in the army. However, because of his frailty and sickness, he was rejected. Overhearing the boy’s earnest plea, General Chester Phillips offered Rogers the opportunity to take part in a special experiment… Operation: Rebirth. After weeks of tests, Rogers was at last administered the Super-Solider Serum and bombarded by “vita-rays.” Steve Rogers emerged from the treatment with a body as perfect as a body can be and still be human. Rogers was then put through an intensive physical and tactical training program. Three months later, he was given his first assignment as Captain America. Armed with his indestructible shield and battle savvy, Captain America has continued his war against evil both as a sentinel of liberty and as leader of the Avengers.

CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER stars Chris Evans, Hayley Atwell, Tommy Lee Jones, Sebastian Stan, Toby Jones, Stanley Tucci, and Hugo Weaving.

    The 'Bourne' Screen Tests Begin

I know this is news from last week but I figured I'd give my two cents on the matter here.

TOLDJA! gave an update last week on the casting hunt for the lead role in The Bourne Legacy.  Previously, it has been reported that a number of young actors were in consideration for Matt Damon's replacement in Tony Gilroy's 'Bourne spinoff' coming out next August.

That list has apparently been narrowed down as the following actors are said to be screen testing the first week in April: Joel Edgerton (Animal Kingdom), Dominic Cooper (Mamma Mia!), Luke Evans (Clash of the Titans) and Garret Hedlund (Tron: Legacy).

To tell you the truth, I wouldn't mind if any of the four got the role.  They're all solid actors who have been building up credibility over the past few years (though Edgerton looks as if he'd be more suited for a villian than anything else).

It is also mentioned that an actor may get the role who is not among the four testing.  Logan Marshall-Green is speculated (I personally thing he would be great, he has that 'intense' presence).  Shia LaBeouf is also named though he wouldn't screen test as he is seen as more of an 'established name' (I wrote up an article on this earlier in the month).  Finally, Taylor Kitsch is thrown into the mix as he has apparently had meetings with Gilroy about the role though of all the names mentioned, he would be last on my list.  I just don't understand what the big deal is about this guy.  He reminds me of an 'Alex Pettyfer type' who is being forced on the public to be the next big thing rather than grown into.

Anyway, with the film planning to shoot this summer, I'd say by the end of next month we'll know who'll be headling The Bourne Legacy come next August.

New 'Captain America' Image and Footage

Marvel today released a new photo from Captain America: The First Avenger showing Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) in full Captain America garb, standing around what looks to be a wreckage area.

I know, it's not much to look at, but maybe this preview ad ET is running for the debut of the first trailer hitting tomorrow will do something for you:

I'll hold my judgement until I see the whole thing.

Confirmed: José Padilha Directing 'RoboCop' Remake

Earlier this month it was reported that José Padilha (Elite Squad films) was in negotiations with MGM to direct the remake of Paul Verhoeven's 1987 classic, RoboCop, with Josh Zetumer (Quantum of Solace) writing the screenplay.

This weekend, in an interview with Motion TV Online, Padilha himself confirmed not only has his deal been closed to direct the film, but that it has been closed for a quite some time (you can watch the interview in subtitles at the 3:20 mark using the player below or read his answers in the text posted below the video):

Q: How are the RoboCop negotiations?
Joe Padilha: It is about doing a new movie
, and we're working on it at the moment, and the negotiations are closed already.

    Q: It is already closed?
Padilha: It has been a while!

Q: Really? We received that news only on March 1st, but it seems like you've been talking about it for some time, is that correct?
Padilha: Yes, we're already working on the screenplay and everything...

Q: This is something that can work out really well or... I mean, because there's a lot of expectations around this, how are your expectations?
Padilha: I have no concerns about it. I only work on movies when it feels right, when I add something of my own way of portraying things. I make movies for myself and I don't feel nervous, I have no problem with expectations, and if the movie is going to work or not. I just look forward to keep its integrity and directing it the best way I can, all the rest doesn't concern me.

Q: MGM was looking for a globally appealing director. Why do you think they chose you?
Padilha: I don't know. I think they saw my movies and felt there was something there that could bring to the present day this controversial, yet different, violent movie which is RoboCop without misrepresenting it.

Q: So when can we expect RoboCop to come out?
Padilha: It's a project I'm developing from the very beginning together with Josh Zetumer, which is the screenwriter, and there's no deadline really. When the screenplay turns out good enough, then we will start shooting.

I'm really intrigued by this choice.  I watched the trailer for Padilha's Elite Squad and loved the gritty, realistic tone of the film.  If he uses this same style for the remake then it will definitely be something completely different than the original.

As for casting, I would love to see Michael C. Hall play the title role.  He's brilliant on Dexter, and this character would be right up his alley.  Hopefully he gets looked at.

    First 'Scream 4' TV Spot

Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell), now the author of a self-help book, returns home to Woodsboro on the last stop of her book tour. There she reconnects with Sheriff Dewey (David Arquette) and Gale (Courteney Cox), who are now married, as well as her cousin Jill (Emma Roberts) and her Aunt Kate (Mary McDonnell). Unfortunately Sidney’s appearance also brings about the return of Ghostface, putting Sidney, Gale, and Dewey, along with Jill, her friends, and the whole town of Woodsboro in danger.
