    Tom Welling Joins 'Draft Day'

Tom Welling seems to be taking the road less traveled in life after Smallville.

Instead of going the route so many TV stars have tried and failed in by wanting to become movie stars but eventually end up doing made-for-TV & straight-to-DVD movies, the former Clark Kent is going for the 'smaller is better' approach.

Welling reportedly has landed a role in the currently filming, Ivan Reitman directed football movie, Draft Day.

Starring Kevin Costner, Draft Day is set around the Cleveland Browns GM (Costner) who attempts to trade up in the NFL Draft to save football in his team's city.  Welling will play the role of Brian Drew, a veteran quarterback who finds himself at a crossroads in his career.

The film also stars Jennifer Garner, Frank Lagella, and Denis Leary.

Welling took a long break post-Smallville (after 10 seasons and over 200 episodes, who would blame him?), but recently wrapped a supporting role in the JFK drama, Parkland, an ensemble film set hours after the infamous assassination in Parkland Hospital in Dallas, TX.  Billy Bob Thornton, Zac Efron, and Paul Giamatti also star in the film which is being produced by Tom Hanks and is set for release later this year.

Draft Day is due out sometime next year and just started filming last month during the real NFL Draft.

Their drones are winning American wars around the globe and now they want to bring this technology to the home front. After he is critically injured in the line of duty, OmniCorp utilizes their remarkable science of robotics to save Alex’s life. He returns to the streets of his beloved city with amazing new abilities, but with issues a regular man has never had to face before.
Director Jose Padilha reimagines the tale of part man, part machine, all cop starring Joel Kinnaman as the title character, Gary Oldman as the scientist who creates RoboCop, and Samuel L. Jackson as media mogul Pat Novak.”

The film also stars Michael Kenneth Williams, Jennifer Ehle, Jay Baruchel, Abbie Cornish and Michael Keaton as the villainous Raymond Sellers.

Wolverine Has Gone Back to the Future

Not every one of Bryan Singer's Tweets is news worthy. No offense. Not every snapshot of Michael Fassbender scratching his ass or Jennifer Lawrence pitting her nose between takes requires us racing to our keyboards. This latest from the set of X-Men: Days of Future Past most definitely is.

What appears to be confirmation Wolverine is the time-traveler (One of several remains to be seen) trying to fix whatever mishap goes down in 1973. Need proof? He's standing next to Nicolas Hoult as a surprisingly de-furred Hank McCoy.

Seth Grahame-Smith to Produce Gremlins Remake

Another of your VHS fixtures growing up in the 80s and 90s is getting repackaged for youngsters, and those in our age bracket today. Warner Brothers is officially commencing with a Gremlins redo, as opposed to the longtime In Development Hell sequel, reports Bloody Disgusting.

And the honors lie to Seth Grahame-Smith, responsible for Get Rich Quick Schemes-cum-best-selling crap Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter and Pride & Prejudice & Zombies, will co-produce. He recently ran his pen (read: laptop) through a Bettlejuice sequel that may or may not appear if you say his name three times.

This might never go past Development phase but the latest rumblings, as of months back, had the studio waiting for Steven Spielberg to give the thumbs up. Even with his non-participation he still gets a check and still has to OK everything. Not too worked up over revisiting Gremlins personally. I suppose it was bound to happen (Everything is about brand-name recognition these days).

The '84 original is fine but my heart always belonged to the bat-shit crazy, and brilliant, 1990 sequel.

    Weekend Box Office: May 10-12

    Courtesy of Box Office Mojo:

    1.  Iron Man 3 - $72.4 million

    2.  The Great Gatsby - $51.1 million

    3.  Pain and Gain - $5 million

    4.  Tyler Perry Presents: Peeples - $4.8 million

    5.  42- $4.6 million

    6.  Oblivion - $3.8 million

    7.  The Croods - $3.6 million

    8.  The Big Wedding - $2.5 million

    9.  Mud - $2.3 million

    10.  Oz The Great and Powerful - $802,000

Iron Man 3 easily took first place in its second weekend (as expected), and once again, Hollywood recoils in shock (as expected) as it discovers that women actually attend movies too, as the The Great Gatsby earned a whopping $51.1 million, making it the third-highest second-place opening weekend of all time.  It's also star Leonardo DiCaprio's second-highest opening after Inception, and it will pass Moulin Rouge! as director Baz Luhrmann's highest-grossing film.  All in one weekend.

Meanwhile, Iron Man 3 dropped 58% from it's big opening last weekend, but still pulled in an impressive $72.4 million.  Its domestic total currently stands at $284 million, and will pass the $300 million mark before Star Trek takes over the IMAX screens on Thursday.  Marvel's favorite son continues to do gangbuster business overseas, where it currently stands at $664 million.  Its worldwide total should pass the $1 billion mark within the next week.

The weekend was not so kind to the Tyler Perry's latest film, as Peeples stalled out with only $4.8 million.  That's a rare flop for Tyler Perry, whose films usually do quite well.

Another big weekend looms ahead, as Captain Kirk and crew return in Star Trek: Into Darkness, which arrives in theaters on Thursday.  Until then, Happy Mother's Day!
