George R.R. Martin Has A Plan To Keep GAME OF THRONES From Catching Up With His Novels

After news came earlier last week about the hit HBO series Game of Thrones and what "might" happen should the series catch up with writer George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire novels, author Martin has told Vanity Fair in their feature Game of Thrones themed issue his plan for making sure the series doesn't catch up before he can release The Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring, the final two novels of his story of Westeros.

The season that’s about to debut covers the second half of the third book. The third book [A Storm of Swords] was so long that it had to be split into two. But there are two more books beyond that, A Feast for Crowsand A Dance with Dragons. A Dance with Dragons is itself a book that’s as big as A Storm of Swords. So there’s potentially three more seasons there, between Feast and Dance, if they split into two the way they did [with Storms]. Now, Feastand Dance take place simultaneously. So you can’t do Feast and then Dance the way I did. You can combine them and do it chronologically. And it’s my hope that they’ll do it that way and then, long before they catch up with me, I’ll have published The Winds of Winter, which’ll give me another couple years. It might be tight on the last book, A Dream of Spring, as they juggernaut forward.

This is what show-runners David Benioff and D. B. Weiss told Vanity Fair regarding Game of Thrones and the novels current time-frame:

"Last year we went out to Santa Fe for a week to sit down with him [Martin] and just talk through where things are going, because we don’t know if we are going to catch up and where exactly that would be," explained Benioff. "If you know the ending, then you can lay the groundwork for it. And so we want to know how everything ends. We want to be able to set things up. So we just sat down with him and literally went through every character.”

It was made clear long ago Martin and the show-runners had gone over the future of the series, as the television show has already featured and hinted at many things not yet touched upon in the books.

Martin also said he isn't opposed to a mid-season break much like Breaking Bad  or Mad Men had, or maybe even a prequel season.

“I don’t want to sound too glib about this. This is a serious concern.” He continues, “We’re going forward, and the kids are getting older. Maisie was the same age as Arya when it started, but now Maisie is a young woman and Arya is still 11. Time is passing very slowly in the books and very fast in real life.”

A Prequel season, in my opinion, would be the smartest thing to do, given the series has a "no flashbacks and no fools" policy, fans of the show who have yet to read the books have not been exposed to Lyanna Stark, Rhaegar Targaryen, and many of the events that have a huge impact on the world.

Game of Thrones returns to HBO this April.

Santino, repped by CAA and Underground, will play Danny, Sally’s older brother, a perfect but uptight overachieving lawyer.

TRUE DETECTIVE Director Won't Be Returning for Season 2

It's been known for a while that the critically acclaimed HBO series True Detective will not be welcoming back it's leads, stars Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, for the show's second season as an anthology formula has been confirmed for "the plan"; but what wasn't known is director Cary Fukunaga won't be coming back either.

This comes by way of Deadline, who report Fukanaga is leaving HBO for FOXier pastures:

Cary Fukunaga is in the middle of a pitch that Fox has bought pre-emptively for mid-six figures. It’s untitled, and it’s set in a contemporary wartime context.

Fukanaga has been praised for his work on HBO's riveting drama, and the show will need to hire some ballsy talent to replace him for the second season.
It has been confirmed though that Fukanaga will stay on as Executive Producer.

Deadline also noted that Nic Pizzolatto will remain on-board as creator/showrunner for the program's hotly anticipated second season.

True Detective airs Sunday nights on HBO at 9 p.m. and only has two episodes left.

HEROES Returning in 2015 For "REBORN" Mini-Series

Those watching the Winter Olympics got a special treat as NBC aired a special promo for HEROES Reborn, a sequel mini-series to their 2006 show about an event that granted humans super-heroic abilities, being hunted by the brain-eating Sylar (Zachary Quinto).

NBC then released a statement:

Heroes Reborn is set to make its debut in 2015 as an “event miniseries” with original creator and executive producer Tim Kring in charge of its rebirth. The show has a 13-episode order.

“The enormous impact ‘Heroes’ had on the television landscape when it first launched in 2006 was eye-opening,” said NBC Entertainment President Jennifer Salke in a press release.

She continued, “Shows with that kind of resonance don’t come around often and we thought it was time for another installment. We’re thrilled that visionary creator Tim Kring was as excited about jumping back into this show as we were and we look forward to all the new textures and layers Tim plans to add to his original concept. Until we get closer to air in 2015, the show will be appropriately shrouded in secrecy, but we won’t rule out the possibility of some of the show’s original cast members popping back in.”

I quit watching after Season 2; but the program's first season was great televison. Who else is excited?

CONSTANTINE Has Found It's Lead in ASSASSIN'S CREED IV's Matt Ryan

Ever since NBC announced their development of a TV series based on the DC comic-book character John Constantine, last played by Keanu Reeves in the under-rated 2005 film of the same name, fans have apparently been worried as if they titular anti-hero would have blonde hair and be British. Well, rest assured, that's what you're getting.

Matt Ryan, who recently gave a riveting performance as Edward Kenway in Ubisoft's brilliant Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag and also can be seen on Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior, has been cast as the series' lead with a description of the character reading:
(From Deadline

John Constantine is described as a working-lass Londoner with rakish good looks, scruffy blond hair, deadpan humor, and signature trench coat, who has been studying the dark arts since he was a teenager.

The series is being written by Daniel Cerone (The Mentalist) and David S. Goyer (Man of Steel, The Dark Knight series).

Based on the characters in DC Comics’ John Constantine stories, the project centers on John Constantine (Ryan), an enigmatic and irreverent con man-turned-reluctant supernatural detective who is thrust into the role of defending us against dark forces from beyond; when the daughter of a late friend is targeted by demons, Constantine steps in to save her.

PREACHER Officially Heading to AMC

For fans of Vertigo's critically acclaimed dark comic which ran from '95-2000 by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon, AMC has officially announced after months of rumor, that PREACHER will be heading to the network.
The series will be run by Sam Catlin who served as writer and producer on AMC's critical darling Breaking Bad which ended just last year, and written by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg of This is the End fame.

Here's AMC's official announcement, via Indiewire:

"Preacher" follows Reverend Jesse Custer, a tough Texas preacher who has lost his faith [and] has learned that God has left Heaven and abandoned His responsibilities. He finds himself the only person capable of tracking God down, demanding answers, and making Him answer for His dereliction of duty. Accompanying Jesse on his journey [are] his former girlfriend and a friendly vampire who seems to prefer a pint in the pub to the blood of the innocent. On his tail is one of the most iconic bad guys in print – an immortal, unstoppable killing machine named the Saint of Killers – a western lone gunman archetype whose sole purpose is to hunt and kill Jesse.

"This is amazing!" said Rogen and Goldberg. "We've tried for seven years to work on 'Preacher,' and we're so psyched AMC is finally letting us. It is our favorite comic of all time, and we're going to do everything we can to do it right. Humperdoo!"

"Steve Dillon and I are very happy to see 'Preacher' being developed for TV, which seems a much more natural home for the story than a two-hour movie," added Ennis. "Between them, Sony TV and AMC have brought viewers two of my favorite shows with 'Breaking Bad' and 'Mad Men,' and it's exactly that kind of creative commitment and courage that 'Preacher' needs. Obviously it’s taken a while, but Ken Levin, along with Neal Moritz and his team, refused to give up, long after the point when I myself grew skeptical, and their unrelenting enthusiasm for the project has gotten us where we need to be."

"I’m particularly impressed that Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, and Sam Catlin understand 'Preacher' fully -- meaning they get it for what it is, not some vague approximation. All in all, it looks like 'Preacher' can now be brought to TV in a way that I'd previously not have thought possible, and I very much appreciate that Steve and I have been included in the conversation in the way that we have."

AMC has taken some bold interests and it has paid off, with The Walking Dead becoming an enormous success for the network, PREACHER could very well follow as the next big thing.
