Movie Moan: Before And After Jack & Jill

The nice thing about our previous podcasts is that we can always listen back to them and remember a time before we watched the trailer for Adam Sandler's latest abomination; a simpler, happier time.  But we don't live there anymore, we have seen it, and words can't desribe how we feel.

To get us through this difficult time, and in the absence of Captain Ed Hocken (who was off eating a big sandwich and preventing global-terrorists from world domination), the Movie Moan gang is joined by a new addition to the team, Anderson of AndersonVision fame.  Tonight he joins us in discussing:

2:24 mins - A brief announcement regarding next week's very special show.

4:55 mins - Anderson's 'to the point' review of 'Zookeeper'.

6:10 mins - The potentially stupid idea of rushing 'Thor 2' to a July 2013 release date.

13:45 mins - Moneypenny finally joins the rebooted Bond universe and Phil couldn't be happier.

22:15 mins - Reactions to the teaser trailer for 'The Iron Lady'.

25:55 mins - Abandon all hope, it's the 'Jack & Jill' trailer.

30:55 mins - All things Comic-Con 2011 (the fact that nobody is showing up, 'The Amazing Spider-man' stealing the show by default, the futility of video game movies, and even some great examples of bad parenting).

43:48 mins - The Moan of the Week - 2001's 'Ghost World'.

Please note that due to technical problems, there is no MP3 or full video enhanced version of the show this week but you can still listen to the show on Blip video above.  The full video version of the 'moan of the week' however, can be viewed separately here.

For the last time Jamie I care for The Amazing Spider-man ,so do loyal fans of the comics and little kids. The movie will be a hit if the movie is good and chances are it will. It has good writers, a good young hungry director and actually good leading actors unlike Kirsten Dunst and Tobey Maguire. I would guarantee Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone will blow Tobey and Kirsten out of the water.

Jack & Jill is a contender for Adam Sandler's worst which is Grown Ups IMO.

Can't wait to see the coverage on the Harry Potter movies. It's sad that the franchise is over but hopefully it will end with a bang.

Luuuv Ghost World. It's interesting that you picked that film this week, because in the U.K atleast, it was released on the same day as Harry Potter and the Philospher's Stone! Hype got to the better of me and I saw Potter, though deep down in my heart wanted to see Ghost World. However, it became a favorite of mine in the tail-end of the VHS era (it was one of the last tapes I remember renting). For some reason, I found the film comforting at that point in my life (late teens). I saw Enid as some kind of a hero, because she was dryly commenting on the type of things I would keep to myself. Sure, she comes across as a bitch in the earlier part of the film, but I really think her and Seymour (who oddly enough was barely in the comic book and didn't have any dialogue or was even refered to as Seymour) blosom as a pair. You kind of wish they did find happiness together, but you just know that ain't gonna happen. I think the scene of them in bad together is very telling of that. She kind of shrugs him off. I disagree with Seymour's more age-appropriate girlfriend being "nice" though. I don't know if you guys missed it as it's a fairly brief moment, but there is a point where it seems like she is selling doggy caskets at the funeral palor over the phone and really doesn't seem bothered at all! All she and her colleague care about is closing a deal.

An interesting theory that I read was that the film's ending is a suicide/death metaphor. Remember the old man who waited for the bus? He finally catches one towards the end (even though that bus-stop wasn't in use anymore) and Enid witnesses it with a look on her face of both intrigue and sadness. The end of the film is her getting on a bus at the same spot. I tend not to subscribe to this theory, because I would rather think that Enid managed to find some exceptance in life, but I can't really argue with that alternative explanation. Shame Birch never really went on to much. She went back to collage shortly after GH, so maybe she stopped being "hot" in the eyes of Hollywood, but I've heard her ex-pornographers-parents-managers are holding her back, which is genuinely sad if that's true. She also looks totally different nowdays. Lost too much weight IMHO. If you had asked me at the begining of the decade which one would be the bigger star, I wouldn't have said Johansson.

That Bond/Moneypenny idea sounds intriguing, but I'd rather not see it. The idea of Bond with a normal lass is a good one, though.

If The Iron Lady goes the "W" route, I might have to piss on the cinema screen!

And A2THEH, I concur with your Amazing Spider-Man anticipation. The more I hear about it, the more I'm interested. Don't forget this "Amazing Spider-man will underperform" talk is coming from a man who once said that Sherlock Holmes would kick Avatar's ass at the box office.

@welshfilmbuff Jamie also said Tron Legacy was going to be a huge hit but looked what happened. Now he's also claiming that Cowboys & Aliens will be a "surprise hit". Ha!
