    Movie Moan: The Nolan Show

Because they didn't dare go against the thoughts/opinions of everyone else on the Internet, this week's edition of Movie Moan is nothing more than endlessly praising Christopher Nolan. So this whole podcast is about how wonderful the one they call Nolan is.

Seriously, Phil, Ed and Jamie give their thoughts on Inception. Yes, they all loved it, and yes, this is a spoiler-filled discussion on everything ranging from performances to their individual takes on what happened. If you haven't seen it yet, listen at your risk. But we urge you to hold off until you check out the movie.

The rest of this week is the usual week in review with film-news. Everyone's reactions to Green Lantern and Thor pictures, updates on Superman: The Man of Steel, Mark Ruffalo as the new Hulk, Aaron Sorkin writing/directing The Politician and the fate of Mission: Impossible IV.

All of that, and Phil gives a special shout-out to the faithful listeners.

Not a bad show guys! I aactually thought the russel brand gag was funny as hell lol.

I have to wonder about your banning comment though phil. Another regular reader/listener etc was recently banned by peter. I don't know the whole story, but it seemed somewhat extreme to me.

Are any of you seeing Salt next week?

    Saw Inception friday afternoon!

I'd go as far as call the film great, but...

did anyone else here have a beef with the sound? Hanz Zimmer's score (while brilliant) was way too overpowering at times, particularly in the first act. I found it difficult to hear what people where saying at times (especially Ken Watanabe), and as a result I lost a lot of set-up information. I saw it at an IMAX screen, if that means anything? I may go and see it at a standard cinema, just to see if there's a difference in the sound. It's funny, because after the first hour I didn't notice the score as much and settled into the film. The last half hour inparticular was almost unbareably tense (like clutching on to the arm-rests tense!). It's been a while since I felt tension like that, watching a movie...

I need a second viewing to see if it's "the third best film ever made!", though.

The prospect of an Arthur remake staring that glamour tramp Brand makes me nauseous! Dudley Moore had more charm in his pinky finger than Brand has in his entire body!

And people say "On the Rocks" is bad!

Great cast team. Wish I could have been there! Especially as I have a few bones to pick with Inception- including the last shot - but overall I loved the flick.

Inception was well... damn I need to see it again. I think the ending was real btw. Nolan needs an oscar nomination already! The Green Lantern and Thor pics don't look that bad. I think Jonah Nolan directing the Superman reboot could work but I much rather prefer Chris Columbus. I think Mark Ruffalo as the new Bruce Banner is a good choice. My expections go up a little bit but damn it I miss Norton. I told you guys that Predators sucked. Thanks for the shout-out you guys rule. :)

PS: LOL at the tumbleweed joke. XD

@batmanfan - Nobody is seeing 'Salt' next week I should think.

@welshflmbuff - Funny you should mention that. Inception was my first outing to the new IMAX which has opened at my local cinema (I used to have to travel a fair way to get to one but I'm an IMAX junkie so I always did). Turns out it was one of those infamous 'cheap IMAX' screens. It wasn't anywhere near the size of a proper IMAX screen, it was just slightly bigger. Having said that, I can't complain. The picture was crystal clear and the sound was so amazing that my chair was actually rumbling. You have a completely valid point about Zimmer. I have always felt the same way about Alan Silvestri's music. It's so over the top that it calls attention to itself. In the case of this film though, Zimmer's score really is the backbone. Every time the music swells, he is providing the emotion, the tension, the thrills and the chills. I thought the music and overall sound design was perfection.

    @Lou - That's why you weren't on the show. You'd just spoil the love-in :)

@a2theh - Nolan is not only going to get nominated for 'best director', he's going to win. I don't care what else comes out this year, I am calling that right now. Jamie thinks I'm crazy.

    As always, thank you friends.

I've got a funny feeling my IMAX is the same. Where do you usually go to watch IMAX films? Leicester Square, by any chance? Never been there myself, but I've heard awesome things about their IMAX screen.

I got my facts mixed up ; I meant the BFI in Waterloo

Here's the specs for all the IMAX screens in the U.K...

We got fucking stiffed! I thought it was too good to be true...

    AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

My usual IMAX is at the Odeon in Manchester. That is a proper IMAX screen (seeing Toy Story 3 there on Saturday) but nothing beats the BFI IMAX in London. I've seen Superman Returns, The Dark Knight and Avatar there. I'm hoping I can add Tron: Legacy to that list.

How is the BFI better than the one in Manchester? Is it because of the way the screen is structured around the building?

    07-21-2010 | Unregistered CommenterWelshfilmbuff

I think going to see those particular movies and how super excited I was for them made the experience better that's all. If someone shoots a film with an IMAX camera that can fill the screen, you want to go to the biggest one.
