Movie Moan: Summer 2011 Prediction Power Hour -The Results

Apologies to such sleeper hits as 'Cowboys And Aliens' and 'Conan The Barbarian 3D' ('sleepers' as in people fell asleep during them and 'hits' as in what we wanted to do to the people who made them) but the Movie Moan crew have decided to close the book on the Summer 2011 blockbuster season.

So you know what that means?  It's results time!

Back in April, Kristina, Jamie and Phil placed their bets on the specific domestic box office grosses of the Summer's heavy hitters (and 'Bad Teacher' for some reason) and on this show, the tallies are calculated and we see who is the winner.  You may be very surprised by the result.  We certainly were.

But it's not just Judgement Day for us.  We paid attention to the predictions you made in the comments section and have picked a lucky web winner for each film as well (though the only prize you win is our respect).  Enough stalling; let battle commence!

Medical disclaimer: If, by the end of this show, you end up shouting "turn the machines back on, TURN THE MACHINES BACK ON" to a large room of people, there is nothing wrong with you.  You just didn't do very well this year.

Movie Moan: Big Rant At The Big Screen

Phil Gee has returned to the Movie Moan podcast after a month absence but to make up for it, he has returned with a complete breakdown of his visit to Empire magazine's 'Big Screen' event, essentially the UK version of the San Diego Comic-Con.

Tonight he gives you in-depth descriptions of exclusive footage he saw from the next 12 month's worth of films including 'Total Recall', 'Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 1', Puss In Boots', 'Contagion', 'In Time', 'Titanic 3D', 'Anonymous', and 'Real Steel'.

He also saw the Comic-Con footage from 'The Amazing Spider-man' which included the first look at the Lizard and provides a blow by blow account of that.

Finally, Phil was at the European premiere of 'Conan The Barbarian 3D' last weekend and, not surprisingly, it totally sucked.  Trust us folks, Phil has never had a lower opinion of a film than this one.  Just wait and see what score he gives it at the end.

Movie Moan: Johnny Depp IS George Lucas

    Queen Kristina said it best:

"When he wasn't a bankable star, he was very, very creative and he was putting all these sort of 'out there' movies, and now that he’s become successful, he's become lazy. And the only person who I can think of to compare him to now is he’s become George Lucas. He's become that guy who has all the money in the world, has all the options in the world...and he decides to make shit."

Harsh words from her Majesty and remember this is someone who generally loves Johnny Depp! But can anyone really say she’s wrong?

Elsewhere on this week's Movie Moan podcast, Jamie briefly reviews Final Destination 5 (and gives away the ending, so beware spoiler-sensitive listeners!) and 30 Minutes or Less and Ed gives his quick thoughts on The Devil's Double.

In the week of news, the gang groans at the notion of Austin Powers 4 happening (and contemplate Wayne's World 3 and how Mike Myers could end up on network television in five years), Disney pulling the plug on The Lone Ranger (Hence why the above-quote comparing Johnny Depp to a certain Star Wars creator), Stephen King's The Stand being turned into a movie trilogy and whether or not a Batman/Superman movie will ever make it to the big screen.

    Movie Moan: Bat-Shaped Cough Drops

Sir Michael Caine will do to Halls Cough Drops what the late Michael Gough did for Diet Coke if the Movie Moan crew has their way! Because The Dark Knight Rises is starved for attention as you all know.

Captain Ed Hocken reviews the British sci-fi/horror/comedy Attack of the Block to much praise, while keeping details vague (because there are some movies even we don't want to give away!) Meanwhile, Queen Kristina and Jamie rip the shit out of Cowboys & Aliens and praise Rise of the Planet of the Apes to no end. Yes, spoilers on both and yes, Jamie acknowledges he was dead wrong labeling the Apes prequel the flop of the summer. Good to wrong sometimes!

In the week of the news, the group focuses on two big first-looks for forthcoming superhero epics: Henry Cavill as Superman in The Man of Steel and Anne Hathaway as Catwoman in The Dark Knight Rises. Lots of joking at the expense of fandom and their over-analyzing and nit-pickiness ensue.

Apologies for any audio issues, folks. The British Gentleman agent Phil Gee should be back next week from his (well-deserved) vacation and we're working with what we've got. Hope you enjoy nonetheless!
