Movie Moan - And The Last Film Ever Made Will Be...

...well you'll have to listen to the show of course but Gabe Toro has the scoop on the film that will literally cause the end of cinema. There will be no need to make any more films once it has been unleashed, assuming you don't die of a heart attack from sheer hype before you even get the chance to see it.

Speaking of which, we at the Movie Moan podcast, consisting this week of Gabe, Jamie Williams, Spencer Perry, the enchanting Jen Mayhew, and myself, are sick of unsubstantiated and out of control rumours being treated as facts and scoops. We have become beyond gullible as a community. As such, this week we will each unleash the rumours we wish we could sit back and watch people fall for; rumours that are utter horse poop but that I know you will wish were true.

And on top of all of that, we course talk about WB's utter stupidity and ball dropping, the gay Doctor Strange that will never be, Spike Jonze's 'Her', controversy with Matthew Mcconaughey, the Academy Awards actually making some good selections this year, and the whole issue of why modern motion pictures made in the last decade just don't seem built to last.

Oh, and if you want to skip to the end first to hear me go nuclear on my local movie theatre for sabotaging my screening of 'The Wolf Of Wall Street' then I won't hold it against you.

Movie Moan - The End Of The Comic Book Movie

It's not a prediction, nor a forecast. It's a debate to settle once and for all........and a man's life is at stake.

Namely our special guest Mr Randall Maynard who swears that, if the Marvel Cinematic Universe falls apart anytime soon, he will kill himself.

Those are the stakes this week as prosecuting attorney Jamie Williams tries to make the case that the comic book movie genre has reached its peak and will end very shortly making way for an implosion of the current studio system and a way forward for more original productions.

Standing opposed is hotshot defence lawyer Phil Gee who stands utterly opposed to this argument and will provide strong and damning evidence that proves the genre will survive and thrive, specifically because the alternative, the end of blockbusters as we know them, is not an option.

Providing sound and wise judgement over the proceedings is the honourable Spencer Perry who will decide the final verdict and we find out who has won........and who is dead.

It's the debate to end all debates. Whether you're sick of comic book movies or devour them, you'll want to listen.

And there's even time for some Movie Moan randomness as we listen to what the guys sound like when they're just chatting before the show starts and don't think that Phil is recording them.

Movie Moan - The End Is Nigh (sort of)

We're back for the new year but we're not going to be sticking around for too long. We have a very important announcement to make about the future of entertainment as presented by Phil Gee and Jamie Williams. And it's at the end of the show so feel free to skip straight to it. I hope you understand what we're doing but if you do have any questions then please feel free to ask me in the comments section below or on Twitter.

And once you've rewound back to the start of the show you can join us as we pick the most important films we saw in 2013, consisting of our favourite film, the worst film, the most surprising film, and the most disappointing film of the year.

Plus, Phil shares a story of how he became more than just a man. He became........a legend.........for an hour.

Movie Moan Audio Commentary - 'Steel' (1997)

Join Phil Gee & Randall Maynard, co-hosts of 'Supermoan: The Ultimate Superman Retrospective' for a look at the loosest possible definition of the term 'spin-off movie' as one of the four imposter Supermen who took over during the death of the man of steel, comes to the big screen in an epic $16 million dollar production.

But if you think we're just going to tear 'Steel' to pieces then you've got another thing coming.  When all is said and done, it isn't the worst comic book movie that came out in 1997, the year that brought us 'Batman & Robin' and 'Spawn'.  We will try and make the argument that 'Steel' has merit, that it has heart, charm, and intentional humour.  It just also has a costume that......,is problematic.

So watch the film (if you can find it) along with our audio commentary as we try and make an entire film studies class out of a mistreated and misunderstood film.

On a final note, Randall corrected me very shortly after we recorded the commentary and pointed out, as you can see above, that they DID release a toy of Steel and his amazing bike.  I hope he gets one for me.

Movie Moan - A Very Merry Movie Moan Christmas

It's always the most fun show of the year and as well it should be because it's the last show of the year.

We've spared no expense this week to give you a podcast every bit as ambitious in size and scope as the film we spend an hour of it discussing; 'The Hobbit: The Pissing Off Of Smaug'.

In an epic roundtable, Phil and Jamie are joined by two gentleman who helped us review the first film in the trilogy exactly one year ago, film critic Gabe Toro (who celebrates his one year anniversary with the podcast), and Canadian representative Mr Lou Sytsma (who has been with us a good deal longer).  Rounding out the cast of thousands are friend to the world Matt Thompson, and the immortal Edward Douglas of ComingSoon.net.

After the smoke clears on a surprisingly pleasant discussion of that film (I think everyone agrees it's better than the last one), things turn ugly and fascinating as Gabe and Ed go head to head for a debate on the merits, if any, of 'Saving Mr Banks'.  What should be a simple review of an innocent piece of entertaining fluff instead turns into a debate on the rights of the writer and how Walt Disney supposedly crushed the spirit and resolve of P.L Travers.  That's what Gabe thinks anyway.  Ed is having none of it.

Following that, what should be a simple commentary on this week's trailers for next summer's product (Interstellar, Jupiter Ascending, Godzilla, and Edge Of Tomorrow) turns into a debate on whether movies that are 5-7 months away should even be marketed at such an early stage.

Despite Phil's best efforts, the gang does have an opinion on Sony's plan to expand the Spider-man franchise to villain spin-off movies.  Phil follows suit by asking, on the back of the 'Naked Gun' reboot announcement, whether the film parody genre is dead and impossible to make today.  And we just have enough time to reflect on 2013 as a year in film.

Phew; have you got three hours to spare?  Well click away and Merry Christmas.
