Movie Moan: Ghost Protocol of the Titans
Sun, January 2, 2011
Obviously, by that title, the Movie Moan gang (Phil, Lou & Jamie) are talking about some of their favorite, and not-so-favorite, films of 2010. Not much else this week besides a discussion on the Coen brothers' True Grit.
While the rest of this week's podcast is dedicated to the best, worst, surprises and disappointments of 2010's filmography. At least, of the films the guys have seen so far. Knock on wood, things should get back to normal next week and they'll have movie-news to talk about too.

I'm gonna have to cheat here...
Best Film (s) of the Year : Inception and The Social Network ; both great movies in different ways. I think in the long run, I will probably watch Inception more, but the sly wit of TSN really seduced me and I hate Facebook anyway, so that was an added bonus ; Justin Timberlake is the new Brad Pitt!
Worst film of the Year : I really tried my best to steer clear of films I knew were gonna suck this year, but I did see the Nightmare on Elm Street "re-imagining". I almost fell asleep watching it.
Surprise (s) of the year : Two films I watched yesterday... The Karate (IT'S KUNG FU!) Kid and (for me atleast) Scott Pilgrim Vs the World. The first film won me over (despite the RIDICULOUS tournament scenes). I was cynical about Jaden Smith, but it seems like he has a (justifiably) bright future ahead of him... as long as papa Smith continues to gear him in the right direction. It also proves that Chan can be a pretty convincing straight actor when given a chance (I've got to give him props for not doing "the sexy cry" in that monologue) ; The more I think about the later film, the more I think it was a satire of "the hipster lifestyle", rather than it being a straight-ahead hipster movie... or maybe I'm just reading too much into it. It's not perfect (that Seinfeld scene was pretty bad), but it often had me laughing-out loud (I particularly loved what happened to Brandon Routh's character!). Both films I'll probably end up buying on Blu-Ray.
Disapointment of the Year : Tron Legacy. Olivia Wilde is the only reason to sit through this. Even the much vaunted Daft Punk score was okay, rather than great... and I usually LOVE Daft Punk!
Phil, Jamie is spot-on about The Expendables' appeal. It's not great cinema by any means, but the nostalgia factor won people over and I know you don't want to hear this... but it's been very successful on DVD and Blu-Ray over the Christmas period*. Would a second movie be a hit?... if Sly & his producers can persuade Arnie to actually STAR this time... probably, but Arnie will need to get back in shape (he looked a bit flabby in that church scene) and the producers will have to pay him a fortune!
*No, I didn't buy it... not yet, atleast... muha-ha ha ha ha! (cue Dr. Evil pinky salute).
Have a happy new year gentlemen :-)
