Movie Moan: This One's For Welsh Film Buff
Loyal listener Welsh Film Buff wanted to hear the Movie Moan crew (Phil, Ed & Jamie, this week) give their thoughts on The Green Hornet, and he won't be disappointed. Don't expect praise from Phil or Jamie on this one. Hocken was smart enough to avoid it altogether.
Elsewhere, the guys discuss Ridley Scott's untitled 3D Alien prequel(s) turning into Prometheus. Thank God. The world got their first-looks at Andrew Garfield's Spider-Man, Rooney Mara's Lisbeth Salander from David Fincher's The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo and Chris Evans in full-on Captain America mode. Even more Lord of the Rings regulars are locked in for The Hobbit. Some you expected (Sir Ian McKellen! Andy Serkis!) and others you didn't (Elijah Wood!)
All of that plus the third James Bond installment with Daniel Craig is officially set for November 9, 2012 much to the delight of Phil and Jamie, Shane Black is surprisingly onboard to direct the live-action film adaptation of the manga Death Note and the guys debate whether or not Tron 3 is really in our future.

Seven bucks? Pfft... I spent £12.30 watching this self-indulgent piffle in LIEMAX™! (™ is copyright of Ben Mankiewicz).
The main problem with this film is, you get the feeling that Rogen and Goldberg sat around watching John Carpenter's Big Trouble in Little China while baked and Rogen said "Yo dude, we should like totally write the movie where the hero is a complete jackass and the Chinesse sidekick has all the brains and skills!" ; the difference is Little China's Jack Burton was actually a well meaning fool, Rogen's Brit Reid is often a deeply unpleasent lout. I think it says a lot about Rogen's fragile ego, that while the film portrays him as a complete doofus, he's a doofus that gets to score with lots of hot babes. I've heard a lot of people say that it's refreshing that neither Reid or Kato end up with the Diaz character at the end, but the only way this would've been interesting on film, is if it was revealed that the Lenore character had a new (maybe more age appropriate) boyfriend at the end... instead of that, we see Rogen and Diaz high-fiving in the back of a limo, despite the fact that she threatens to charge him with sexual harrassment at one point. It's too bad Christina wasn't here this week, because I would have been interested in her take on it (if she saw this piece shit, that is. I'd like to think she has more common sense). Hell, we even find out later on that the fight he got into as a kid, was over a girl! Purleez Rogen!
And despite the bad press this film has been receiving for months, I was still shocked with just how sloppy that third act was! It just felt like 90 minutes of what Rogen thinks is hillarious and then he suddenly realized "HEY!!! WE NEED A PLOT, DUDE!" followed by his insufferable chortle... so it was up to Goldberg to come up with the mess that is the last thirty minutes. They even go back on their word slightly, with Reid (for some reason) being able to see things in "Kato vision" and actually managing to get in some good punches (again, I guess Rogen wanted him to be an idiot, but not pathetic... because that would be like totally gay, dude!).
Have I seen worse films than GH? Yeah, ofcourse I have... but it's been a long time since I saw a big budget tentpole release, be so blatantly cynical without having kind of point to make. For all it's graphic violence and strong language, Kick-Ass ultimately had a strong moral center to it... this doesn't and I don't think many people will really respond to it. Though sadly, it will make more money than Kick-Ass did.
Ahem...
I saw The Losers...
Oh, and thanks for the dedication, guys ;-)
