Focus Features To Distribute Interracial Marriage Drama 'Loving'
Last October, I did a write-up on the Jeff Nichols' in-production feature, Loving, based on the true story of Richard and Mildred Loving who fought for their marriage rights after being exiled from their home state of Virginia in 1958. Joel Edgerton and Ruth Negga were set as the lead characters, with frequent Nichols collaborator, Michael Shannon, also a part of the cast.
Since then, the film has been completed and readying itself for a distribution deal. Low and behold, today we have news that Focus Features has acquired the rights, paying $9 million to distribute both in North America and throughout most international territories.
The deal was made off of promo footage shown to buyers last night.
It's expected the film will get an end-of-year release with a strong push going into awards season.
This is great news for all involved in the making of this film as its story seems quite appropriate and engaging in our currents times. Not to mention, Jeff Nichols has long been due for his breakout film and this looks to finally be it.
More to come on this project as it becomes available.
