Breathe, Inception fans. The movie did just fine this weekend.
Christopher Nolan's mind-blowing new film easily took the #1 spot this weekend with an estimated $60.4 million, which is pretty damn good considering most of the general audience had no idea what was going on from the trailers. Hopefully good word of mouth will keep the box office high for the next few weeks.
Inception also had an impressive international opening, grossing an additional $15.6 million to put its worldwide total so far at $76 million.
Last weekend's top film, Despicable Me, continued to do well, dropping only 42% to finish the weekend with $32.7 million and crossing the $100 million mark in less than 10 days.
Not such a great weekend for Disney's The Sorcerer's Apprentice. After a weak Wednesday opening, the Nicolas Cage fantasy struggled against Inception and Despicable Me this weekend, finishing with just $17.3 million. It has grossed only $24 million since Wednesday.
For some reason, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse continues its successful box office run, earning another $13.5 million to put its domestic total nearly at $265 million.
Toy Story 3, which at $362 million is now officially Pixar's highest-grossing film (not to mention the highest-grossing film of the year as well), had another great weekend, rounding out the top five with $11.7 million. Its worldwide total now stands at $630 million.
It was also another good weekend for Adam Sandler's Grown Ups, dropping only 37% and earning another solid $10 million this weekend, putting its domestic total to $129 million.
This weekend's biggest fall from grace was Predators, which dropped an ugly 73% and finishing the weekend with just $6.8 million, putting even behind The Last Airbender, which has been in theaters a week longer.
Knight & Day continues to fade, hanging on in 9th place with just $3.7 million and still nowhere near the $100 million mark with just $69 million. The Karate Kid, on the other hand, is fading from its theatrical run with its dignity intact - with a reported $40 million budget and a $169 million total, it's currently the summer's most profitable film.
Last but not least was the impressive opening of Focus Features' The Kids Are All Right, which expanded its run from just 7 theaters to 38, and still managed to bring in an incredible $1 million. With excellent reviews, this could turn out to be one of the sleeper hits of the summer - hopefully we get an expanded release soon.
Check back with Mitch when he reports back with the actuals later this week!

Great news for Inception. It is worthy of its BO.
