Movie Moan's Summer 2015 Box Office Predictions Spectacular

Join Phil Gee, Jamie Williams, Shawn Robbins, and Ed Douglas as they reunite to do battle once again and predict the box office on the most interesting, packed and competitive summer movie season we've seen since.......well, since the last time they made an Avengers movie.

Over the next, near three hours, we'll be predicting the US domestic gross on 16 of the summer's biggest films (yes, we had to let 'The Man From UNCLE' go, I'm sure you'll forgive us).

But don't just watch the show, TAKE PART!  We want your predictions.  Just cast your eyes on the list below, go to the comments section of this episode on Think McFly Think, paste in the list, and put your numbers next to it.  The prize is my eternal respect.  C'mon, that's priceless:-

    1. Avengers: Age Of Ultron (May 1st) - 8:18
    2. Mad Max: Fury Road (May 15th) - 23:24

What about Spy? You guys just pass over it? Really?

    04-7-2015 | Unregistered CommenterCJohn

    @CJohn

We had to make some tough calls to cut down the list this year. We have four hosts, 16 films to break down between us, and a very finite amount of time that our guests are available to record. Plus, we usually get flack for the shows being too long as it is. I'm sure the movie is great and will be a big hit, and then we can slap our heads on the results show.

But we can't do them all.

    04-7-2015 | Registered CommenterPhil Gee

Slight correction to the show folks. Shawn's prediction on 'Ant-Man' is $130 million, not $139 mill like the video says.

Great show! Also, really enjoy the Moviemoan in its new format, in general. Google uses linear regression to help studios anticipate box office, so I'm definitely taking that into consideration.

    1. Avengers: Age Of Ultron (May 1st) - $600 million
    2. Mad Max: Fury Road (May 15th) - $120 million
    3. Pitch Perfect 2 (May 15th) - $92 million
    4. Tomorrowland (May 22nd) - $145 million
    5. Poltergeist (May 22nd) - $55 million
    6. San Andreas (May 29th) - $ 65 million
    7. Jurassic World (June 12th) - $170 million
    8. Inside Out (June 19th) - $221 million
    9. Ted 2 (June 26th) - $115 million
    10. Terminator: Genysis (July 1st) - $87 million
    11. Minions (July 10th) - $400 million
    12. Ant-Man (July 17th) - $206 million

Enjoyable show, gentlemen. I was hoping to download a copy of the podcast to my phone, but that option is missing from the SoundCloud options for some reason.

I was thinking of posting my box office predictions, but how can a mere mortal beat The Dumpling King?

Fun show. Believe this year was the closest everyone has been to each other.

I suck at this so no list for me.

    Just a few observations:
    1) Avengers - agree it won't hit the same numbers as the first one. This one is darker and having Stark responsible for the creation of Ultron and the ensuing destruction is going to disengage part of the audience. Not a MOS type of 50/50 split but a significant one to cool the Avenger BO juggernaut a tad.

Destruction in movies plays differently than in comic books and animated forms. It's more visceral and impactful. And some people don't want that in a comic book movie.

    2) My surprise pick of the summer - Terminator Genisys - Arnold is back and people dig time travel movie what if movies. This could be BIG.

    3) Tanks of the summer:
Jurassic World - domesticated Raptors?!?!? Seriously the trailer is retarded.
San Andreas - disaster flick? No thanks. Sounds like a GTA spinoff. Boy those fans are gonna be disappointed!
Ted2 - a one trick story and its time has passed.

    4) Marvel's first sign of hubris - Antman. It'll do OK but nothing fantastic.

    5) Schizophrenic Pick - Tomorrowland - will either bomb or do boffo biz. No middle ground for this one.

Gonna be a fun summer tracking everyone's predictions!

    @Directionless

I have amended the SoundCloud version now so it should be downloadable. Sorry about that.

    @JayHollywood

It may very well be low. So what will it do?

C'mon everyone, I've got five predictions so far. Keep 'em coming. Don't let the Dumpling King be unchallenged. The success will mean nothing to him otherwise, I'm sure.

Avengers: Age of Ultron - $230 million opening, $655 million total (#1 movie of year)
Mad Max: Fury Road - $155 million
    Pitch Perfect 2 - $145 million
    Tomorrowland - $160 million
    Poltergeist - $55 million
    San Andreas - $100 million
Jurassic World - $310 million (#6 movie of the year)
Inside Out - $255 million (#10 movie of the year)
    Ted 2 - $90 million
    Terminator: Genysis - $140 million
Minions - $410 million (will only make the # 3 movie of the year however)
    Ant-Man - $265 million (#9 movie of the year)
    Pan - $125 million
    Pixels - $90 million
Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation - $210 million
    Fantastic 4 - $150 million

Movies that I think you over looked (at least if you were going for the biggest summer movies anyway) and that should have been in this video:
Hot Pursuit - $85 million (never rule out giant movie counter programming)
Magic Mike XXL - $135 million
    Entourage - $75 million
    Spy - $110 million
Insidious Chapter 3 - $70 million (will have a bigger box office than Poltergeist)

Later in the year movies that I think will be big:
Maze Runner: The Scorch Trails - $90 million
    Hotel Transylvania 2 - $125 million
Spectre - $325 million (#5 movie of the year)
The Peanuts Movie - $145 million
The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 - $335 million (#4 movie of the year)
The Good Dinosaur: $280 million (#8 movie of year)
Star Wars: The Force Awakens - $520 million (#2 movie of the year)

According to Box Office Mojo the most movies north of $300 in one year is 4; I think we have the possibility of 7 (Furious 7 with about $305 million joining the 6 I have posted) hitting that mark this year with 3 of those going north of $400 million. It would not surprise me if 2 more (The Good Dinosaur & Ant-Man) get very close and possible making it over that mark as well. Call me crazy all you want but I was one of the few who came real close to the opening weekend and total gross of The Avengers and the total gross of Avatar. I posted those predictions to Ed's Weekend Warrior blog so maybe they are still floating around out there somewhere.

This year is going to be the biggest box office year to date (even with the Batman v Superman move to 2016)

    04-9-2015 | Unregistered CommenterLarry H

Correction to my above post: The most movies north of $300 million in one year is 5 instead of 4. Happened in 2012 when the first Avengers movie came out (embarrassing that I missed that since I am picking The Avengers: Age of Ultron so high. LOL)

    04-9-2015 | Unregistered CommenterLarry H

    1. Avengers: Age Of Ultron - 595
    2. Mad Max: Fury Road - 145
    3. Pitch Perfect 2 - 105

    5. Poltergeist - 75

Longtime fan. Been reading/watching since 2012 on your summer 2012 show. Love you guys. I do think you're sleeping on a few that are gonna do well though. Someone mentioned Insidious 3(think that'll be bigger than Poltergeist myself). Also, Straight outta Compton. The trailer for that has gone over surprisingly well. I think it could do at least 60-80 million, possibly even 100 if the reviews are good.

-Avengers:Aget of Ultron 520 million(It could go much higher but I think that's about as low as it goes. If furious 7 gets to 300, avengers should have no problem getting to 5)

-Mad Max:Fury Road 70 million(It looks very unique but I have a feeling we're about to learn that mad max= Mel Gibson for people in the same way Arnold is the Terminator. I'm shocked nobody really mentioned this during the podcast).

-Pitch Pefect 2 125 million(It's gonna kick Mad Max's ass. I saw the first one and it's a funny little flick. I'm a guy though. I just liked it. I think women LOVE it though and that's what'll drive the BO on this one).

-Tomorrowland 95 million(Is anybody other than nerds excited for this? I've not met anybody. I love Brad Bird too but this is a hard sell even for Disney. It may crawl to 100 million but that's it. Still going with 95 and saying it doesn't get there. This and Mad Max are tied for the pacific rim of summer 2015).

-Poltergeist 45 million(opens with about 19 million and dies not too long after. WHO wanted this film remade?)

-San Andreas 65 million(Just like Hercules, it'll do OKAY at best just on Dwayne Johnson's fanbase and people liking dumb 90's style disaster flicks but it has no buzz and looks pretty bland as well).

-Jurassic World 180 million(It'll perform like the third one. Nobody is dying for this to exist in the general audience but nerd nostalgia will keep it from bombing. It has been enough time since the last one for people to care...but not by a ton).

-Inside Out 250 million(It'll be carried by wom, good reviews, and the audience desire to see an good, original, NON SEQUEL, Pixar flick again. A big hit but not a pheneomenon).

-Ted2 - 115 million(Amazingly, I think nobody is dying for this anymore. I thought the first one was hilarious when I saw it but it feels strangely dated now and I think the audience has just kind of moved on a bit. Then again, if it does the same thing, that wouldn't shock me either. Could go either way but i'm betting on it doing less).

-Terminator Genysis- 130 million(Just like Salvation only a better movie. I have a feeling i'll dig it but the audience has no interest in another Terminator and the entire internet has been dying to hate it since it's inception. BUT I do believe it'll be a better movie somehow and that'll carry it a bit when it opens kind of small).

-Minions-310 million(I don't get the love for the despicable me movies. First one was mediocre and yet people came out in droves for both. This will be no different. The drop will only be because it's a third film and spinoff but kids will still see the shit out of it. My nephew and niece love minions and they haven't even seen any of the movies!).

-AntMan- 140 million(I hope it's great and I hope it does better but for a Marvel flick, it has no buzz whatsoever and Marvel seemingly have no plan for future installments also makes it look like a one and done. Reviews will mean a lot for this one.)

-Pan- 55 million(I don't know if it'll move. I think people all saying it will makes it seem like they'll stick their guns but...I hope it moves. It doesn't stand a chance where it's at. If Antman outright flops or if Minions underperforms, it has a chance, otherwise it's dead in the water.)

-Pixels - 100 million(Does it look like every other Adam Sandler flick? Not exactly, but the laziness is still evident. Every actor looks like they either outright don't care or they're only there for a check. I think the special fx look like shit too. I know they're trying to make it look 8 bit but...it still doesn't work really. If it weren't for the concept, I don't think it'd make it past 40 million, but curiousity will get it to 100 million).

-Mission Impossible:Rogue Nation- 140 million-(Lack of competition, probably decent reviews combined with people not loving it like the last one and you get 140 million. Plus there's always the "tom cruise" effect. There seems to be a chunk of the population that just nonsensically hates Tom Cruise. I don't really get it but whatever, it's there. I can't tell you how many movies that I recommend to people and if they hear either tom cruise or ben Affleck they just shut down and stop hearing you. It's weird.)

-Fantastic Four 80 million(It won't do very well but I think the reviews will be good and Fox will push forward with a sequel. Now if that flops, it's ass is going back to marvel and we'll see the FF squeezed into Infinity War with a couple of cameos before then to set them up).

Hope I do well. This is my first time playing :)

    1. Avengers: Age Of Ultron (May 1st) - Here's the thing.... all the Avengers movies got the so-called Avengers bump, surely the actual sequel would benefit from that bump too? It all hinges on reviews and word of mouth but I'll be bullish - $642
    2. Mad Max: Fury Road (May 15th) - I think everyone's going way too low here - $205
    3. Pitch Perfect 2 (May 15th) - I'm not a teenage girl so I have no idea - $80 million
    4. Tomorrowland (May 22nd) - So a Disney flick on a great release date? It gets knee-capped by J.W but it should get a respectable number - $124 million
    5. Poltergeist (May 22nd) - Hey! Name recognition really did wonders for Carrie, The Thing and, um, most other horror remakes. I love me some Sam Rockwell but this thing needs to be buried in an Indian burial ground to see any life - $34 million
    6. San Andreas (May 29th) - Looks way too self-serious $58 million
    7. Jurassic World (June 12th) - Even if it sucks, people will come out and see it for themselves. Is Indy IV an appropriate comparison here? $294 million.
    8. Inside Out (June 19th) - Three weeks til Minions, and didn't Toy Story 3 and the first Despicable Me co-exist well enough in Summer 2010? If it is what it promises, it would be one of those unique word of mouth movies that brings in a wide audience - $325 million.
    9. Ted 2 (June 26th) - I love Ted. I could not give a fuck about this movie - $68 million
    10. Terminator: Genysis (July 1st) - Why is the marketing not playing up the fact Khaleesi is Sarah Connor?!?!? If T3 only did $150 million back when Terminator films were considered good things, how does it do it after Salvation? $114 million
    11. Minions (July 10th) - $215 million.
    12. Ant-Man (July 17th) - Marvel after The Avengers? $236 million.
    13. Pan (July 24th) - MOVES
    14. Pixels (July 24th) - Adam Sander equals shit movie. People, eventually, learned this. $90 million.
    15. Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation (July 31st) - Should be fun, right? And people dug the last one - $218 million.
    16. Fant4stic (August 7th) - Benefit of the doubt - $155 million.

Sorry to take so long but I wanted to do my homework this time and watch all the trailers first.

    1. Avengers sequel - $575 million

    2. Mad Max - $80 million

    3. Pitch Perfect 2 - $120 million

    4. Tomorrowland - $140 million

    5. Poltergeist - $75 million

    6. San Andreas - $90 million

    7. Jurassic World - $130 million

    8. Inside Out - $170 million

    9. Ted 2 - $60 million

    10. Terminator: Genysis - $175 million

    11. Minions - $240 million

    12. Ant-Man - $250 million

    13. Pan - $70 million

    14. Pixels - $50 million

    15. Mission Impossible - $180 million

    16. Fantastic 4 - $150 million

    My notes on the movies/trailers:

    1. Avengers - I'm in the minority that I think this movie actually looks better than the first (I'm the only one who didn't like the first at all). On the other hand, that $200+ opening weekend was a little too lightning in a bottle which is why I think this will make less. I just don't see any movie, even the sequel topping that opening weekend.

    2. Mad Max - I realize tastes differ but this trailer did absolutely nothing for me. I thought it looked terrible and the villains or whatever they were just looked strange.

    3. Pitch Perfect 2 - I know the first was a surprise hit? I didn't see it because it wasn't to my taste but this trailer did look pretty amusing so I can see it doing reasonably well.

    4. Tomorrowland - I didn't get a very clear idea of the premise from the trailer for this but maybe I'm just slow. I always think trailers that don't easily show what the movie's about are not good trailers. Still a Clooney movie though and Disney.

    5. Poltergeist - Why are they showing this in the summer? Why not Halloween? I don't see many people wanting to see this type of movie in the summer, is it just me?

    6. San Andreas - It looks like a Roland Emmerich movie and no matter how you feel about him (or The Rock), people do turn out for Emmerich's movies, at least to an extent.

    7. Jurassic World - I don't think anyone is clamoring for any more of these movies; the first movies were so long ago now. I don't feel nostalgic about the trailer. But it is Spielberg so who knows?

    8. Inside Out - I asked Ed about this movie on Twitter and to paraphrase what he said: he liked what he saw with reservations. Pixar or no, something about this movie does not click with me, does not make me think it'll do as well as some other Pixar movies, and most of all that it's too mature a topic/story for the younger kids. Even the trailers are almost...ambivalent? They're a little weird. In any case, I'm not feeling it and I'm getting the feeling it'll be more of a Ratatouille than an Incredibles.

    9. Ted 2 - This trailer was so horrifically cringeworthy and stupid. If there is a God, this will flop. And much as I love Family Guy, I think Seth MacFarlane needs to quit making stupid movies. And hosting the Oscars.

    10. Terminator: Genysis - I made my aversion to Matt Thomson's description of this pretty clear when he talked about it but I may end up eating my words because I actually like what I'm seeing in the trailers. I'm not saying I love it or will even see it but I can't deny it has my attention. I'm certainly far more interested in it than Jurassic World or even Avengers (but I'm in the minority there). I don't see it being a blockbuster but I won't be surprised if it does well. It also looks far better than Salvation (which I never did see).

    11. Minions - I have a feeling this is the movie everyone will overpredict because of the success of the DM movies. To which I say as cute as this looks, I have reservations about a full movie around characters that only speak gibberish and while I think it will do well, I don't think it'll do as well as DM and DM2.

    12. Ant-Man - Another movie where like Terminator: Genysis I may have to eat my words. The teaser trailer just confused me but I'll admit the full trailer looks really good and Paul Rudd might be the RDJ of this franchise (though not as successful as RDJ). I smell a hit but that's just me.

    13. Pan - Meh. This looks no better than Hook. I quite often feel like Wolverine aside, Hugh Jackman isn't very good at picking scripts.

    14. Pixels - The trailer I hated the most other than Ted 2. Is this supposed to be a comedy? Or an idea for an SNL sketch that went out of control? Who greenlit this because it sounds and looks incredibly stupid.

    15. MI sequel - These movies still make money. I haven't seen any of them after I got burned by the first one but they still seem to have an audience.

    16. Fantastic 4 - I'll admit this looks far better to me than the first movies they did. I could see this doing well but not great. I think it's wise they went with mostly not-well-known actors.

I have some breaking news proving some of you are apparently psychic. (Phil, if this somehow ruins or spoils the game, feel free to delete this). http://www.ew.com/article/2015/04/20/warner-bros-pushes-back-release-pan-october
