Movie Moan: Phil & Jamie Go to Hell
The title is ironic considering how much Phil wants to be Tim Curry in Legend. No, the British gentleman agent makes a crack about Peter Graves and Jamie does likewise to the Pope. So it's straight to the underworld for the both of them, but not before this week's edition of Movie Moan, of course.
Ed and Jamie review Ben Affleck's The Town and rave about the film and its performances including Affleck himself, Rebecca Hall, Jeremy Renner and Jon Hamm. Speaking of the Mad Men star, the gang addresses the story (originating here at TMT) of his being a candidate for the new Superman reboot. The bold decision by Tom Cruise & Co. to rename Mission: Impossible 4 *wait for it* The Mission. True Lies getting the TV treatment and the guys think up other 90s era films that need to be rebooted for television. Sasha Baron Cohen is announced to headline a Freddie Mercury biopic and based on that brilliant casting call the guys make director suggestions ranging from Baz Luhrmann to Danny Boyle.
Wrapping up this week is not so much a debate as it is a conversation starter. What movie props would you want to own in real life – yes, they'd be able to perform the same actions as they did in their perspective films. U.S.S. Enterprises, Blue Brothers mobiles and Superman costumes (and then some) are all brought up.

I actually believe that your last show was your best(and not just because you went through my list of cinema gripes). The whole reason why we argue, discuss, and read movie news sites is because of those moments in film. The timeless and defining moments you experience in a theater. That's what cinema is all about. I'll always remember sitting in a theater being frightened by Doc Brown jumping out of the DeLorean. I'll always remember the sound my theater audience made when the Joker did his magic pencil trick. I'll always, ALWAYS remember the precious moments of life I lost when I saw Wild Wild West. This why we care about movies in the first place, and I thought it was a great discussion.
The props I always wanted to own in a realistic way(meaning they don't work), were the DeLorean from Back to the Future, John Steed's umbrella sword, a proton pack, Robocop's gun, and the silver cane from "The Wolf Man". It's also been my secret desire to one day have a collection of macguffins. I'd love to have the One Ring, the Maltese Falcon, the Necronomicon, the Ark of the Covenant, and Excalibur.
I personally don't need the shout outs for every show. They are appreciated, but I just like that you listen to what your fans. Still would love to know which movies you guys would like to see in a big theater that you never got the chance too. Going to see The Exorcist next week, and I'm excited.
The Robocop gun; I should have thought of that.
Your comments continually inspire and fuel us to keep broadcasting in the face of such a boring news month. We will be discussing films we'd want to see on the big screen on an upcoming show. We'll be tying it in with my viewing of the BTTF re-release.
That Freddy Mercury bio-pic doesn't sound very illuminating to me, if it's gonna end at Live Aid. I know he didn't give many interviews, but surely there's stuff they can draw on that happened between that historic event and his tragically early death. Of the three directors you guys mentioned, I would agree with someone like Danny Boyle, but I don't know about the other two. Luhrman seems like an obvious choice at first, but could end up being self-indulgent (must confess to being something of a Luhrman fan, but I didn't care for Australia at all). This is a controversial opinion, but Edgar Wright's work has never really impressed me much. His output just seems like a triumph of fanboy wankery, over wit and genuine feeling (I found Shaun of the Dead annoyingly manipulative towards the end). Maybe he has a more mature film up his sleeves, but I don't see much evidence of it so far.
As for film-props... and obscure choice this, but first and foremost I would have to go with one of the Martian ray-guns in Tim Burton's Mars Attacks! (a film me and probably three other people love). I remember when you could be them as toys in Forbidden Planet and I pestered my mother for one Christmas of 1997, but being 14 years old at the time she refused to buy me one. One of the movie versions would be cool to have. On the make-up front, anything to do with the Faun in Pan's Labrinth would be awesome! That was such a breathtaking cinematic creation! And there seems to be next to no merchandise available either, which I find unfathomable!
You're right sir, Pan's Labyrinth unforgiveably slipped my mind when discussing recent movie make-ups and those Martian guns were very cool.
But you know what I'd like most from Mars Attacks?............My money back, boom boom :)
I got nothing this week guys. :( Wait Phil how can you hate Mars Attacks!
The only time I laughed in "Mars Attacks" is when Tom Jones breaks into "It's Not Unusual" when an eagle lands on his arm and he's surrounded by woodland creatures.
